Why handmade field tile

Every tile is pressed, trimmed and glazed by hand, so no two are identical. Colors pool and break at the edges, surfaces carry the maker's touch, and the finished wall has a warmth mass-produced tile can't copy. We've supplied projects from new construction to century-old remodels and everything in between.

How a project works

  • 1. Pick your tile

    Choose shapes and sizes from the field tile collection, or lay them out yourself in the wall designer. Sold by the tile or by the square foot. No minimum order.

  • 2. Choose your glazes

    Thirty-nine glazes, mixable however you like. Colors on screen are close, not exact — every glaze is applied by hand. For larger orders we can make sample tiles in your glazes at cost.

  • 3. We make it

    Your order is pressed, fired and glazed in our Detroit studio. Lead time depends on the size of the order — get in touch and we'll give you a date. Larger orders earn a discount.

  • 4. You install it

    We make tile; we don't install it. Any tile setter can lay it like standard ceramic. In the Detroit area we're happy to put you in touch with installers we trust. We ship anywhere.

Field tile starts at $5 per tile and $68 per square foot, depending on shape and size. Larger orders are discounted — send us your design or square footage for a quote. A 50% deposit starts production.

Good to know

How long does an order take?

It depends on how much tile you need. A small backsplash moves faster than a whole bathroom, and every order is made after you place it. Tell us your project and we'll give you a lead time before you commit.

Can I get samples?

With 39 glazes and 16 shapes we don't keep sample tiles on hand. For larger projects we're glad to make glaze samples or sample tiles in your choices at cost, so you can see them in your space before ordering.

Is there a minimum order?

No. Order a single tile or a whole room. Field tile is sold by the tile and by the square foot.

Do you install?

We make the tile; installation is by your own tile setter or contractor. Handmade tile lays like any ceramic tile. In the Detroit area we can share contacts for installers we've worked with.

Where do you ship?

Anywhere. Tile is packed by hand and shipped from our Detroit studio.

How is it priced?

Per tile or per square foot, depending on shape — from $5 a tile and $68 a square foot. Larger orders are discounted; send us the design or square footage for a quote. A 50% deposit starts production.

Will the color match the screen?

Closely, but not exactly. Every glaze is mixed and brushed by hand and fired in a gas kiln, so tiles vary tile to tile and batch to batch. That variation is the point of handmade tile.
